House of Furies by Madeleine Roux

Book Review, TBR, Unliked Books

Hello! It’s been a long time. Well not too long, though. I know what you might be thinking but, I wasn’t feeling good the past days and as a result I took me an eternity to read House of Furies. Now I’m back and hope to end reading all the books on my fall TBR. (If possible๐Ÿ˜ณ).

To start let me tell you what I liked about this book:

  1. The Gothic ambiance.
  2. Found some good quotes.
  3. Mr. Moningside.

Now that I told you what I liked, I’ll proceed with the review.

Despite of having a very good topic on the beggining and all the Gothic ambiance surroundings, this book,ย  for me, was too slow. The protagonist, Louisa Ditton, she made me upset, and yes, I hated her. It took me eons to finish this book but the main reason was when I started to read, I found it quite boring, but decided to give it a try.

After 100 pages, it caught my attention, but then, it started to be annoying. I don’t know if it was the slowness, but I was expecting more. It wasn’t terrifiying and I think it’s a book that can be read in any season of the year. So if you’re planning to read this “spooky” book for october, mmm, let me tell you is not that “spooky”. There is couple of disturbing images, but nothing so extraordinary.

Also I feel a little bit guilty because I’ve destroyed at least three books on this blog, and I’m not proud of myself. As an indie writer I know the struggle of writing a book and it is sad when someone doesn’t like what you wrote. But gosh! Is my opinion. My experience while reading a story, and I would be a liar if I say I loved the story when that doesn’t really happened!ย ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Anyway, here are the quotes:ย

“Even when the world is crashing down around my ears, you find a way to make it easier.”

“Misfortune find us all. The only difference is when and how you resolve to face it.”

“The grim reality we must all face is that the dark and different and strange among us us face a kind of exile.”

Animal By G.S. Banks Spoiler free Review

Book Review, Favorite Readings

Disclaimer: The author kindly sent my a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Have you ever wondered if thereโ€™s an animal inside you, waiting to get out? If you did, then you were right. More right than you could have ever imagined.ย

There are people in this world who, when they reach their teenage years, really do manifest the powers of their animal. They fight like bears, swim like fish, fly like eagles, jump like frogs and scheme like foxes.ย

Ordinary people with extraordinary powers.ย

They call themselves, Anitars.ย

16-year-old Nina Gregory should have manifested by now; everyone else in her family already did. As a young girl it was all she ever wanted, but when a heartbreaking event happens right in front of her and there is nothing she can do to help, Nina begins to feel like she is not destined to become a superhero after all.ย

Wherever there is light there is darkness and a group of people exist who want to take the powers of the Anitars for themselves, and these people are growing in resources and strength. When Ninaโ€™s little sister is kidnapped by them she has no choice but to try and save her.ย

So begins Ninaโ€™s incredible adventure, right into the heart of this mysterious, magical world of superheroes and their astonishing gifts.ย

My opinion.

I will not lie to you, when I first started reading this book, I wasn’t liking it very much but I decided to give it a try, and, ยกOh God!, I won’t regret it!

I think my first conflict and the reason I wanted to leave this book, was the main character, Nina. But guys, I will advise you: don’t give up on reading a book, just because it hasn’t caught your attention from the beginning.ย

I really loved the concept of the book and the plot was very interesting. I never read anything like this before; all about the Anitars and the manifestation and the process it takes to them to manifestate and everything was just amaizing!

When I decided to give Nina a second chance, I was surprised of the turn the things took in just a moment and once the action begins it never ceases until the end. You’ll follow her through her perils with a gang which is “Squad Goals”. The dangers she has to face once she’s out of her comfort zone, are the reason it takes to give way to a beautiful and stunning transformation. Let me tell you a secret: I knew it!ย

Guys this book has been enjoyable, sometimes I wanted to punch her right on her face, sometimes I wanted to hug her. But these are the emotions a book character transmits to a reader. I have to say Banks absoloutely did a great job!

Quote:

“No war has ever been won without the loss of a battle”.

Rating:

It’s a 4/5ย โ˜… because I feel the ending could have been better… But I must wait for the other books to come, though.

Thanks for reading! Until next time…

A monster Calls Book Review (Spoiler Free)

Book Review, Favorite Readings, TBR

Awwwww the feels! This book made me weep like a child and I’ll tell you why right now. But first let’s know what this book is about ๐Ÿ˜‰

Goodreads Synopsis:

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isnโ€™t the monster Conorโ€™s been expecting. Heโ€™s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one heโ€™s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screamingโ€ฆ

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

My Opinion:

There is to much to say about this book and don’t know how to start. This is my first book from Patrick Ness, and what can I say? I’m speechless.

It made me think about how to deal with grief, not only in childs, but also adult people. I lost my father last year and as Connor, I felt guilty, I felt angry, impotent. Those are feelings we all experiment when we pass through something like losing a love one. But it’s ok to feel it. We just have to find the way to let go. And in this book, with a very special way, Ness tries to tell how to let go. How to deal with it.

A monster Calls was my first reading of the year and I’m not dissapointed. It has become one of my faves from 2017, just starting the year! I cried, I wept, I smiled. I’ve learned how to let go. I don’t know what else to say because I’ll start crying again so here’s the rating.

Quotes:

“How do you fight all the different stuff inside? By speaking the truth, the monster said. As you spoke it just know”.

“You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do”.

Rating:

5/5โ˜…

PS. This wasn’t a proper book review, so let’s say it was about how reading this book made me feel.

The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall

Book Review

Goodreads Synopsis:

In this asylum, your mind plays tricks on you all the timeโ€ฆ

Deliaโ€™s new house isnโ€™t just a house. Long ago, it was the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Femalesโ€”an insane asylum nicknamed โ€œHysteria Hall.โ€ However, many of the inmates were not insane, just defiant and strong willed. Kind of like Delia herself.

But the houseย stillย wants to keep โ€œtroubledโ€ girls locked away. So, in the most horrifying way, Delia gets trapped.

And thatโ€™s when she learns that the house is also haunted.

Ghost girls wander the halls in their old-fashioned nightgowns. A handsome ghost boy named Theo roams the grounds. Delia finds that all the spirits are unsettled and full of dark secrets. The house, as well, harbors shocking truths within its wallsโ€”truths that only Delia can uncover, and that may set her free.

But sheโ€™ll need to act quickly, before the houseโ€™s power overtakes everything she loves.

My Opinion:

Well, when I saw the tittle of this book, inmediatly I thought I had to read it. When I started reading it I was so thrilled and excited, but at some point, to me the book started being very slow and meaningless. The main Character, Delia, was almost unbereable for me till the end. She was so, let’s say, inmature, impulsive, childish.

Despite all the negative thoughts I had about the book, I decided not to quit. The plot is captivating, I don’t doubt it, but it was Delia that left me with this feeling of disappointment.

Is not scary as some of you may think when you first look at the cover, but it occurs to be a little bit disturbing and of course is charged with paranormal content, like ghostly girls and an evil black smoke that pushes girls through windows making them die in an instant.

In general I have to say it wasn’t at all so bad, but it could’ve been better.

Here are some quotes I found very profound about life:

“There are different ways of wanting something. I suppose what I mean is that you have to belive you can do it”.

“The living don’t know what they have. They waste it”.

“Maybe the absence of torment was its own kind of peace”.

“In the end, we must always be the judges of our own consciences”.
